I made this shirtdress in 2015 using McCalls 6891, view A, and the fabric is a cotton/linen blend. The pattern went together beautifully, and it has POCKETS. Two of them. Nice big ones.

It is supposed to have buttons and buttonholes down the front, but I wasn’t very confident with buttonholes when I made this, so I did poppers instead and added decorative buttons on top. I have recently become less terrified of buttonholes, and should probably replace the poppers.

The only thing I don’t like is that the armhole facings pop out, and the bodice is unlined. When I make this again (which I will, I love this dress!), I want to try and combine the front edge facing with the armhole facings, for an all-in-one facing which will finish the armholes as well as the front edge, and possibly extend to the waist to serve as a lining as well. I’m sure it is possible, I just need to think about it for a bit longer.

Pattern number

McCalls 6891, View A

Description

Shirtdress with sleeve and skirt options

Difficulty

Intermediate – You are happy wearing the things you make. You can put in a zip and do buttonholes. You have used more fussy fabric such as satin or floppy/silky fabrics.

Fabric

Main: Cotton/linen blend

Instructions

The instructions were clear but it is good to work slowly and carefully when doing collars and facings. This isn’t a pattern to rush through if you haven’t made it before.

Alterations

I just did my normal lengthening by an inch on the bodice.

Conclusions

I highly recommend this pattern. It is a good classic style and I plan to make more.

  • I love this dress. I wish I could sew, I made a few skirts when I was a teen, but it’s been over 20 years since I’ve pulled my sewing machine out. Not sure if I could sew now or not

  • Great post! Brings back memories of the days when I’d go to the local sewing store. (JoAnn’s in our area) and poor over the pattern books for hours looking for the perfect one to pick! I used to sew a lot, now not so much. You’ve definitely inspired me to get my sewing machine out and perhaps start again!
