I have been meaning to make myself some garment bags for ages, and got round to it at last. I used some old sheets in a lovely muted green. The reason I wanted to use sheets is to take advantage of the ready-hemmed edges. The top edge also makes an excellent buttonhole panel.
I folded the sides in, right sides together, measuring and pinning to get everything straight. I used an old garment bag of my mother’s to make a pattern for the shoulder curve, and laid a dress down over it to mark the length. I made one full length and one tea length.
After sewing the side and bottom seams, I turned and pressed it, and then sewed across the top, making sure to leave a section open for the hanger to poke out. I then marked out the spacing for buttonholes, practiced on a scrap, and I’m so glad I did. Buttonholes never work properly the first time. One false start, and eight practice buttonholes later, I did the actual buttonholes. They came out well in the end.
I found the buttons in the clearance section at Joann’s, and the letters stand for various forms of dance: Waltz, Jive/Jitterbug, Hustle, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep.
